Brexit…

There seems a penchant among Politicians to quote from the Communists of the past. First there was John McDonnell quoting from Mao’s Little Red Book during the Autumn Statement speech and last Friday it was Robert Jenrick quoting Lenin when describing the aftermath of Brexit “There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.”

During the regular Q&A slot, James Fountain, chairman of the Action Group, sought reassurance from Robert that Newark would remain front of mind when it came to support and investment.

The East Midlands is woefully under invested per capita in terms of rail investment and this needs to be corrected if we are to remain competitive.

Robert reassured members that he was working hard on behalf of businesses and that we had been promised a multi million pound investment for the dualling of the A46 around Newark and had pressed the outgoing Education Secretary Nicky Morgan to sign – off on the Newark Toot Hill Free School.

Black eye for cricket fan

A sheepish Dave Ashby, attended Newark Business Club with a corking black eye, not the result of a punch-up, but an injury sustained at England’s record breaking stand at Trent Bridge.

Dave was caught on the cheek by a six from Jos Butler in the world record victory against Pakistan. He said, “I was doing a bit of networking at the time and was not paying attention to what was happening on the pitch” – lesson learnt we think- he won’t get caught out next time!

Racing certainty

Southwell racecourse jumped at the chance to sponsor the NBC newsletter. Their racing colours will appear on the masthead for the next four months.

Be inspired

Forget about your worries and your strife – ‘be inspired’ and enter the Newark Business Awards – this was the jungle mantra from Rachel Wilson, from the Newark Advertiser, organisers of the annual business event.
