Connecting Business & Families

Businesspeople from Newark and the surrounding areas headed to the YMCA for Newark Business Club’s August meeting.

After the welcome from chairman Simon Gabbitas, the roving mic was passed around the room, allowing everyone to introduce themselves and let everyone know what their business was looking for, from new staff to marketing services, from sales funnels to business cards.

A rewarding and fulfilling experience

Today’s meeting was sponsored by Nexus Fostering, a private agency that places children with foster carers. It provides support for carers on a 24/7 basis and is rated Outstanding by Ofsted.

In the first presentation, Megan Ingram of Nexus Fostering gave an insight into fostering from the points of view of foster carers and children. Every 20 minutes, a child goes into foster care because they can no longer live with their birth family for a variety of reasons, and as of 31st March 2024, 57,540 children were living with foster families in the UK. Therefore, there is a large demand for new foster carers to look after these children and give them a loving and stable home.

In addition to loving and caring, foster carers help children to get into good routines, increase their self-confidence, and reach their full potential, making fostering a rewarding and fulfilling experience for adults and children. Several types of fostering roles are available, including sibling fostering – there is a great need for this because 70% of siblings have to be separated before being fostered – and parent and child fostering, where you support a parent and child for a short time, teaching parenting skills.

The main requirements for fostering are being a UK resident over the age of 21 with a spare room. There is no upper age limit, with Nexus Fostering’s oldest foster parent being 82, and single people or couples with or without children are welcome to apply. The application process takes 4-6 months.

The presentation ended with an emotional poem expressing how it feels when your original family is torn apart, and you become a foster child.

Paying It Forward, A Veteran’s Story – Remembrance 2024 Exhibition

Next on the agenda was table networking, giving everyone the opportunity to talk about their business and pass round business cards. After the coffee break, it was time for the Who Gives a Book?! section. Give and Take by Adam Grant was Newark Business Club’s inspiring business book of the month, recommended by Simon Gabbitas. The winner of a copy of this book, drawn from the business card bowl, was Paul Chadbourne of Radio Newark.

In the second presentation, Renee Foster of Motorfinity talked about a new community project to pay tribute to Armed Forces veterans through the art of photography. For this project, Motorfinity is collaborating with Nottingham County Council and Paul Saxby Photography.

Paul Saxby served in the Royal Air Force as a photographer and his mission is to pay tribute to the veteran community by creating meaningful images that evoke a feeling and tell a story. He is now offering veterans of the armed services free portraits in advance of an exhibition in which the portraits and short interviews will be showcased, telling the veterans’ extraordinary stories to raise awareness of their experiences and keep those stories alive.

The ‘Paying It Forward, A Veteran’s Story – Remembrance 2024 Exhibition’ will be held in the Buttermarket in Newark from 5th until 14th November and will be taken on tour.  If you would like to nominate a veteran, a veteran and their partner, or a family member who would like to pay tribute to a deceased loved one who was a veteran, you can contact Paul by email: paul@paulsaxby.co.uk

If you enjoy photography, you can get involved in the project by entering the Motorfinity Photographic Competition for Remembrance. The closing date is 7th October and further information can be found at: Remembrance Photography Competition 2024 (motorfinity.uk)
