If you’ve noticed a few more families than usual peering into shop windows across the town centre this week, there is a very good reason for it. The “We Are Newark” Easter Trail is officially in full swing, and it’s a masterclass in how simple, local initiatives can drive engagement with our town’s businesses.

Running until April 12th, the trail encourages residents and visitors to explore Newark on foot, starting at the historic St Mary Magdalene Church. Participants follow a map to find 12 eggs hidden in local business windows, collecting letters to solve a final anagram in exchange for—you guessed it—a free chocolate egg!

Why This is a Win for Local Business

At Newark Business Club, we know that “footfall” is more than just a statistic; it’s the lifeblood of our local economy.

What makes this trail so effective for our members and local stakeholders?

  • Slow Shopping: As one parent shared on Facebook, the trail “kept two boys occupied for over an hour.” That’s an hour of potential customers lingering on our streets, discovering new shops, and seeing what Newark has to offer.
  • Collaboration in Action: From the church to the independent retailers hosting the eggs, this event shows how Newark works best when we work together.
  • Accessible Fun: It’s a free activity that makes the town centre a destination for families during the half-term break.

Navigating the Trail (and the Roads!)

It’s fantastic to see the town so vibrant, though we do have one tip for those heading out on the hunt: keep one eye on the eggs and the other on the pavement. We all know that Newark’s “local villains”—the potholes—can make a quick stroll feel more like an obstacle course! Luckily, the reward of a chocolate egg at the end makes the trek well worth it.

The Forward-Thinking Perspective

Events like the Easter Trail are exactly what keep Newark dynamic. Whether you’re a small business owner seeing new faces at your window or a larger stakeholder like GXO seeing the community thrive, these grassroots efforts matter. They remind us that Newark isn’t just a place to trade; it’s a place to experience.

Have you seen the trail in action yet? Or perhaps your business is hosting one of the elusive eggs?
