Navigate 2024 with Purpose and Passion

After an early start on a cold, dark morning, around 80 businesspeople gathered at the YMCA for Newark Business Club’s first meeting of the year. Welcoming everyone to the meeting, chairman Simon Gabbitas, shared an inspiring quote from James Keller, contributed by Katie Gibson of the Children’s Bereavement Centre: “A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.”

The roving mic travelled around the room, giving everyone the opportunity to introduce themselves and their businesses. It was great to see a lot of new faces in the room.

Tree of Well-being

Today’s meeting was sponsored by Wendy Baird of Tree of Wellbeing, a juice bar and wellbeing studios at 25 Stodman Street in Newark. Wendy spoke about her entrepreneurial journey, which has led her to set up her current business. It all began when she noticed a ‘to let’ sign on a shop in the centre of Newark. When viewing the building, she was surprised at how much space there was and she could see its potential straight away. When she signed the lease, the building was an empty shell, so Wendy, her daughter and business partner, Abigail, and their team started to transform it into a welcoming and calming space with modern décor and an attractive exterior.

The Tree of Wellbeing consists of several branches. The roots of good health are in a healthy diet, so that is why the juice bar and café are on the ground floor. The additional branches of wellbeing are housed on other floors and include massage therapy and acupuncture spaces, a meditation room, and an infra-red sauna, which has many benefits, including pain relief and soothing sore muscles.

Wendy is passionate about making good health and wellbeing accessible and affordable for everyone. Through the Newark Community Hub CIC, a community interest company founded by Wendy, over 10,000 affordable takeaway meals were provided in the local community during the pandemic.

Tree also provides corporate wellness days and wellbeing retreats. Businesses can hire rooms, including a counselling room, or the whole building, for training days or shorter meetings. Equipment is provided, and refreshments and delicious, healthy food are offered.

Exciting Projects ahead for NSDC

After the coffee and breakfast break, Councillor Paul Peacock, the leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, gave an overview of current and future projects in the local area, which will benefit from government funding. Based on a residents’ survey, the Newark and Sherwood District Council Community Plan for 2023 to 2027 provides a road map for future development and is now available on the council’s website.

Current projects in Newark include the Air and Space Institute, which will be opening in 2024, the Stodman Street retail and residential development, scheduled to be completed in summer 2025, and the transformation of the Sherwood Avenue play park into a space with something for everyone.

Projects outside Newark include improvements to the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, the regeneration of Ollerton town centre, including a state-of-the-art library, cinema and retail units, and eco-friendly industrial units in Clipstone.

Councillor Peacock was joined by Councillor Rowan Cozens, the deputy leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, to answer questions from the audience. A lively Q&A session followed with questions on a variety of local-interest topics, including affordable parking in the town centre, pool access for disabled people at leisure centres, and measures to deal with anti-social behaviour.

Sarah gives us a taste of Chinese Medicine .

Sarah Paling is an Acupuncturist and a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC).  She began providing group ear acupuncture sessions to people recovering from drugs and alcohol; seeing the benefits inspired her to complete a degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture at the Northern College of Acupuncture in York.

Acupuncture has been used in China for over 2000 years and is now widely used all over the world.  Acupuncture regulates the flow of qi within the body by inserting fine needles into specific points on meridian pathways.  Mind, body and spirit are inter-dependent and the person is treated as a whole, not just for the presenting condition.

The evidence base for acupuncture is growing and research is available on chronic pain, tension headaches, migraines, neck/back pain, TMD pain, anxiety, menopausal symptoms, PMS, period pain, overactive bladder and more!  Some people have acupuncture to aid mood, sleep, stress, emotional wellbeing and to help with relaxation.

The initial assessment involves a medical history and tongue and pulse diagnosis which will enable me to decide which acupuncture points will be used, needles are usually left in for 20 minutes.  Cupping, moxa and electro-acupuncture may also be used.

I am based at tree on Stodman Street, Newark on Fridays and Saturdays and offer evening appointments on Wednesdays.  If you would like to book please follow the link below or contact me on 07769970732.  Please let me know if you would like any further information and will hopefully see you very soon!
